polyply

A quick 2 week long project.

model: acrylate polymer (acrylic plastic), birch plywood, birch

Called polyply because of the materials used.

Made a few iterations along the way. All parts were cut on a laser cutter.

Designed to be harmonious with Apple products.

Holds an iPad, iPod Classic, iPhone 4 and a stylus.

Slim profile.

polyply features a dead simple stand design.

minimally minimal.

The hole is cut to follow the iPad's curve and therefore reducing the thickness of the stand.

Unity of plastic, plywood, metal and glass.

The iPad can also be charged during use.

The iPod and iPhone protrude out of the stand making charging easy.

Perfect match with the Apple keyboard.

Having the iPhone and iPad together allows for multitasking.

The stand can also be flipped for a lower viewing angle.

The angle of the stand has been perfected for the optimal viewing angle and balance.

polyply.

If you're the kind of person who doesn't own any electronic device without a big, bright Apple logo on the back, then this ingenious contraption is for you. Designed by art and design student Andrew Seunghyun Kim, the PolyPly...

This is very nice! It seems like it would make a great setup for these devices, since I admittedly own all of them (albeit slightly older versions). My only thought though is that it would be great to be able to charge and plug headphones or a line into the iPod/iPhone/iPad simultaneously.

Simple and clean! Side note: what iPad stylus is that and how is it?

The front looks great and so does the inside with the diagonal stripes. The sides and the stand aren't super attractive, but still very cool.

It is always inspiring visiting your posts & projects. I like the idea of this polyplay board Andrew. Less is more :)

If I may sugest, similar to the ipad station all the other gadgets look a little bit out of place, maybe if you make the same kind of solutions used in the ipad for the rest it will feel more integrated.

I also love the detail that from behind you can see the apple logo. Is it to much if the iphone and ipod could share that detail? Just and idea.

Congrats, thats a nice and inspiring project.

I like it, I just wish you did something more than the doll rod stand.
also jealous of the laser cutter

Thanks for the comments guys.

To those people concerned with the stand design, I had a bunch of sketches for more complex designs but went with the most simple solution to the problem.

Hello from Germany,

very nice thing that you created!

One little thing could maybe changed?
The iPod stands out just a little more to the right than the iPhone and the stylus. Maybe you can put these in one line? I hope you can understand what I mean ;) Dunno how to explain it in an other way...

Cheers.

Looks nice.

What was the reason behind making the iPad portrait opposed to landscape and extending off the board like the other devices?

February 11, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMichael Bragg

Nifty! I forgot the iPad could rotate upsidedown when I saw the picture of the flipped stand, which confused me for a moment. :P

Perhaps you should look into using different colours/materials in the future to even better match the devices, like a combination of aluminum and a nice shiny black!

Wow! Excellent design. Creative and functional. Love it!

hmmm, the iPod classic is a bit obsolete, no (unless you're a diehard user)?

The design is very pretty though

Was the diagonal on the ply just a stylistic choice or does it have any functional attribute to it?

This is a fantastic stand. You wouldn't consider selling one to me would you? I am being completely serious... I'm not a spammer or anything.

is there a 'like' button on this page? :)

Sorry for the late reply, totally overloaded with work right now.

I've been getting a few people contacting me for purchasing of PolyPly, but currently, I cannot produce more due to time constraints.

Additionally, the price of materials and operation costs would make the PolyPly far less attractive compared to the options out there right now.

Thanks for the interests guys.

I love it! BRAVO

With a bit of integrated electronics to remove the cables flying around I'd say it's a cool idea. A mechatronics engineer like me and a designer like yourself should come together and make beautiful babies (products).

I'll buy it if ya sell it!

Love the design! It's clean. However, not everyone has an old ipod. How much?

March 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCinNik

I love the simplicity of this and would love to have one on my desk at work to keep all my iDevices in check!

Dude you need to submit this thttp://www.kickstarter.com and start mass production. I want one! Make a few versions, for ipad, ipad 2, for other tablets.

March 19, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterWayne Sutton

Nice job Andrew. Could you please give information on the laser cutter used.

March 19, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterFoxyOrb

I want one! Are you planning on producing these to sell?
